Our Research

Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) represent a significant population group who are particularly vulnerable to the negative health effects of tobacco/nicotine, cannabis, and drug use. Most adults who use substances often began during adolescence or young adulthood making their health behaviors and outcomes of great public health concern. The yHEART lab is focused on identifying biopsychosocial, environmental, and behavioral determinants that increase health-risking behaviors among AYAs. Using quantitative, social network, and machine learning methodologies, we aim to:

  • Elucidate the complex relationships and influences that affect health behaviors among adolescents and young adults.

  • Examine the sociocultural context and experiences that perpetuate substance use-related disparities, especially among minoritized groups (e.g., racial/ethnic minorities).

  • Identify risk factors that increase likelihood of substance use/disorder and can be targeted in regulatory efforts to reduce substance use burden broadly and among vulnerable population groups.

  • Examine the trends and prevalence of adolescent and young adult substance use, including tobacco, cannabis, and other drugs.

  • Disseminate knowledge on addressing and eliminating health disparities.
